The Client
A multinational company, active in the construction chemicals industry with a strong focus on polyurethane waterproofing coatings.
The company had developed a 1K aromatic polyurethane waterproofing mid-coat for exterior applications, however, the system offered poor tensile properties due to the evolution of CO2.
Carbon dioxide generation will affect the film integrity resulting in poor intercoat adhesion and potential water penetration causing structural weakness.
The Solution
The company shared information on their existing formulation and related shortcomings. Incorez’s application team proposed the use of Aldirez BH aldimine moisture scavenger technology, to resolve the problem. The customer had limited experience of formulating with aldimine technology and received extensive formulation support to find a solution.
By using Aldirez BH as a moisture scavenger, the company was able to formulate a range of high quality, durable coatings.
The Benefits
Aldirez BH is used in a wide variety of 1K aromatic moisture triggered polyurethane coatings. The technology lends itself to high build waterproofing applications such as roof, floor and balcony coatings.
In a traditional moisture cure reaction, moisture reacts directly with the terminal isocyanate of the prepolymer, generating carbon dioxide. In a moisture triggered system, moisture reacts preferentially with the Aldirez BH aldimine rather than with the prepolymer’s terminal isocyanate groups. This technology avoids the generation of carbon dioxide, which leads to bubbling and pin-holing.
The addition of Aldirez BH in the company’s formulation provided the final product with improved durability and better intercoat adhesion.
